Today we met up for our first meeting of the International Garden Club. This club is going to be a combination of gardening and fun plant-related activities (think arts and crafts, cooking, etc.). It was a bit cold and rainy out, so instead of the cement stepping stones that we’d planned to make we switched gears. We had a colorful bouquet of flowers from a May Day event, and a variety of Dutch Tulip end-of-season stragglers that we felt were the perfect ‘victims’ for our art projects. I pulled out the hammers, and soon we were busy pounding our flowers onto thick acid free papers, creating wild colors and beautiful splatters. (Scroll down for our amazing results!)

After a significant amount of pounding we each created art that we were very happy with! No two pieces are alike, and there’s an organic quality to our designs that I think is just gorgeous. Hammering transfers color, texture and pattern. What a lovely way to use up some of our last early spring flowers as we make room for all the blooms yet to come! I’m excited for our next International Garden Club meeting, and look forward to welcome new friends as we explore all the wonders that our international themed garden has to offer.

Join us for future International Garden Club days right here in southern Oregon, between Talent and Ashland. The club is completely free, open to youth ages 9 – 16, and meant to celebrate all the amazing plant life that we can grow here from around the globe.
